Andres Herrera bought the 10 hectares of land now known as Finca La Providencia 32 years ago. He began growing coffee with some help and know how from his grandfather. He utilizes pine and oak trees as well as native guachipilin as shade trees, to promote sugar development in the cherries. Water at the farm is provided by 1200ml of annual rainfall, a nearby natural spring, and the local municipal supply.
The Region is known for its volcanic soil, low humidity, warm days, and cool nights – perfect growing conditions. The valley is surrounded by three volcanoes – Agua, Fuego, and Acatenango – whose occasional eruptions provide fresh coatings of mineral rich ash.
Andres has recently started working alongside the team at PrimaVera, Guatemala’s primary Specialty Coffee exporter, to ensure consistently high quality. PrimaVera’s aim is to assist farmers in receiving the best possible price for their coffee, by optimizing farming practices. They provide technical advice and physical guidance on every aspect from growing, to harvesting, to processing and drying.
His current focus is on improving picking strategies to ensure that only the ripest, healthiest fruit goes further in the production process. This is one of the least costly ways to immediately improve cup quality
