Ethiopia may be the birthplace of coffee, but is it a complex country when it comes to regions and identification. An Ethiopian coffee can be identified in various ways, including region, zone, processing mill or simply by a local name. Yirgacheffe lies within the Southern Nations, Nationalities, and Peoples’ Region and is one of the most well-known coffee growing regions in the world. Coffees from this area are known as ‘garden coffees’ and are grown in the small backyards of thousands of farmers across the region.

This Naturally processed lot is the outcome of very selective hand sorting of cherry both when picking and sorting before drying. Only the ripest cherries were selected, the layers of cherry were kept to as thin as possible and the tables were tended to with turning very regularly to ensure even drying. Chelba is a privately run mill in Gedeo and produces a number of unwashed lots to exacting standards.

The cherries are picked by smallholders who deliver to Chelba from their farms which average 2 acres each. The total area of these producers is about 888 hectares with an altitude of 1950 to 2300 meters above sea level. The farmer group consist of about 490 farmers and together they have an annual production of about 577 metric tonnes.
