On 7th May 2020, devastating rains, flooding and heavy mudslides hit the Nyabihu District in northern Rwanda. Nyabihu is home to the families that produce the popular Shyira and Vunga coffees that you may know and love.
Vunga Cooperative Families is a woman-led, well-established small cooperative.
Vunga Cooperative began its partnership with MTCo in 2017. The Cooperative itself has been in operation however, since 2009. Collaboration between Vunga Cooperative, MTCo, and Raw Material has ensured that Vunga increase their quality, and fetch a higher price for their coffee, whilst introducing them to new markets.
Vunga is a well-known washing station, though it is located in an area in Rwanda where very little coffee is produced, it has a reputation for producing extremely high-quality coffee. In 2012, Vunga placed 13th in the Rwanda Cup of Excellence and 4th in 2014.
Vunga’s producers receive bonus second payments as well as health insurance through the Cooperative.
Unfortunately, the region has recently been hit by environmental disaster, as landslides and persistent rainfall have spread across the region causing monumental damage to communities and their livelihoods. Raw Material and MTCo are currently running a GoFundMe to help with relief efforts. If you are able to donate any amount, big or small, it will be hugely beneficial.
