The Chota region of Peru is a challenging place to produce coffee thanks to its extreme altitude and cool climate. However, these factors also mean that coffees from this region have the potential to be outstanding.
In recent years Mario Jesus has turned over 5 hectares of his farm to coffee production, and with the help of the exporter, Finca Churupampa consistently delivers on that potential. Last year he invested in a drying house and some tools like a refractometer, with the aim of improving his processing and producing more consistent coffees; with great success. One of his lots reached 3rd place in the most recent Peruvian green coffee competition (Atipanaku 2020) and scored 90.97 points on average.
Extended fermentation times (due to the cold) lead to complex volatiles, fruity flavours and lots of malic acidity in the cup.
